HysterectoStory

Updated: Jan 6

In the summer of 2023 I wanted to ensure I had daily creative practice alongside having my total abdominal hysterectomy. This culminated in the project 'HysterectoStory'. I created an automatic drawing each day in the lead up to the operation, on the day of surgery and through the recovery. I knew I needed to create throughout as a way of me getting through; creating...well...it just helps, so I am trying harder and harder these days to just do something, whatever it is. I had no idea what was going to appear - the process being the most important, therapeutic, factor and the end result being an interesting record of my experience.

I gave myself parameters, all chosen with practicality in mind, to allow me to a) not have to think each day what materials to use and b) create easily whilst in hospital. These parameters helped me just 'get on with it'!

Update January 2025 - I have just added a self portrait to this gallery as it shows my body, including the hysterectomy scar, 569 days after my operation. My body is different and so am I, I'm really ok with that, and I wanted to mark this stage (or ending of this episode in my lifetime) by doing an unashamed nude self portrait.
